Genealogy 101: The Brady Gang

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
The Brady Gang
Monticello Union-Township Public Library
Program Room
Join us for a series of Genealogy classes covering topics on research, resources, and stories about history. For January, we will learn about the Brady Gang. From a historical prospective one of the most tragic events in White County would have to be the ambush killing of Trooper Paul Minneman that occurred in 1937 at the Caley Church.  The notorious Brady Gang had robbed State Bank of Kentland and were headed east after the heist.

Trooper Minneman staked out Hwy 16 in Cass Township east of Buffalo. An exchange of gunfire occurred and then the dust cloud created by the bank robbers ceased.  The trooper knew that either the offenders pulled off the road or turned onto a county road.  Trooper Minneman turned around and pulled into the Caley Church.  The gang had already set up an ambush complete with a retrofitted WWI .30 cal. machine gun.  As Trooper Minneman started to get out of his vehicle, the Brady Gang opened fire with rifles and the machine gun.  Minneman was critically wounded as was Deputy Hicks.  Minneman would die two days later but Hicks recovered.

The presentation by State Trooper David Morrison (retired) has spent 30 years researching the Brady Gang and will share their exploits and their eventual demise.
